Most accidents on fishing boats occur due to people drinking onboard and there have been many…mostly from people falling overboard and being unable to swim because of their level of intoxication.

Alcohol directly intensifies the effects of boat motion, sun, wind and fatigue, which in turn affects your judgment, balance and reaction during an emergency.

All fishing boats should have some sort of personal floatation device or lifejacket,if yours has to have a designer label for you to even think about wearing it….Go buy one!.

However, don’t just have it in your boat, put it on.

Important things to consider when you plan your fishing trip include weather forecasts, fishing reports, possible local hazards, waterway conditions and safety equipments, vital necessities…mobile/cellphone, first aid kits and lifejackets.

A good GPS device is always a good investment for the boat fisherman, especially if chartreading is not your thing.

It is also vital to tell someone you trust about your boat fishing trip and give them your schedule and when to expect you back.
