When it comes to cleaning ceramic tile, there are two points to keep in mind. You want it to be thoroughly clean, but you also want to make sure it does not become damaged. Whether the tile is on your floor or on your bathroom walls, you are actually dealing with two different products. In addition to the tile itself, you also have the grout. Grout holds the tiles together, while acting as a barrier against moisture and residue. The cement compound of grout, and the tile’s clay and glaze, do not require a painstaking cleaning process. However, they do require sensible care.

What will you need? Make sure you have the following: chisel, hammer, trowel, thin-set mortar, safety glasses, dust mask, knee pads, and a shop style vacuum. Also get a 2 pound maul (a heavy long-handled hammer used to drive stakes or wedges). You could also speed up the completion of the project by using an electric tile stripper or a small jackhammer.

There is really no easy way to do this job. Since there is no underlayment or subflooring that can be pried up and thrown out (like tiling on wood or a cement board), removing the tile will require that you extract the tiles and adhesive with your tools. This will definitely take some elbow grease and time (a small room will take a half day, at least).

Very frequently these tiles are formed using a method called dry pressing. Dry pressing requires the minimal amount of water be added to the clay, the clay is pressed into a metal mold, and pressure is applied forcing the clay to the bottom of the mold where it takes the desired tile shape.
